Chestnut Street Bridge Over I-95 Closes January 15 for the I-95 CAP Construction

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is slated to close the Chestnut Street Bridge that connects Penn’s Landing to Old City on January 15.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, that the Chestnut Street bridge over Interstate 95 and Columbus Boulevard at Penn’s Landing will be closed beginning Monday, January 15, for demolition of the existing covering over I-95 between Chestnut and Sansom streets in Center City Philadelphia.

The bridge closure will affect SEPTA bus routes serving the Penn’s Landing area, including Routes 5, 17, 21, 33, 38, 42, and 44. Details on the affected bus routes will be available from SEPTA in early 2024.

Access to Penn’s Landing and the waterfront will remain open to pedestrians by using the Market Street bridge from 2nd Street.

With the bridge closing, Chestnut Street traffic will be detoured south on Front Street.

Please note: The public restrooms located under the Chestnut Mall will not be accessible from the Great Plaza beginning January 15. Those restrooms will only be accessible through Independence Blue Cross RiverRink during the site’s operating hours. We appreciate the patience of the public and apologize for any inconvenience.

Demolition of the bridge and the adjacent covered area over I-95 (Chestnut Park) is expected to get underway following the bridge closure. The work is part of PennDOT’s multi-year $329 million I-95/CAP project to replace, expand, and improve the existing covered section of I-95, and improve multi-modal connections between Center City and the Delaware River Waterfront that are expected to be completed in 2028.

The new covering over I-95 will be enlarged to span between Chestnut and Walnut Streets and will extend from Front Street east to cover Columbus Boulevard. The new covered area will also include the construction of a new Park at Penn’s Landing.
